Why doesn't iTunes store recognizing my credit balance?

A credit balace of $44.26 is listed next to my name on my iTunes account, yet when I try to make purchases it defaults to my credit card. How do I get the iTunes store to recognize my balance. I've long ago thrown away the card with the authorization code which I used to redeem my $50 gift card.
