Apple TV Won't work with Macbook?

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and the 3rd Generation Apple TV. When I turn on Airplay from my macbook, nothing happens (other than the airplay symbol on the top bar lighting up blue). The screen resolution doesn't change, nothing happens on the Apple TV. In the airplay menu, it says connected. It is ALWAYS on the "Extend Desktop" setting. No matter how many times I click on "Mirror Built In Display", it doesn't select it. Furthermore, even when I disconnect from Apple TV, scrolling up and down on the Apple TV remote toggles my macbook's volume control. For example, when scrolling up on Netflix, my volume on my macbook goes up. When scrolling down on the Apple TV, my volume on the Macbook goes down. Any ideas?
