Difference between iMovie and Movies

iMovie is an application. Movies is the plural of the noun Movie.

Also, in iMovie terms, a Movie is a kind of a Project as distinguised from a Trailer.

In a Trailer you add you clips to a pre-built template with graphic, title and music to simulate a Hollywood-style movie trailer.

In a Movie you either add your clips to a pre-built Theme with titles and graphics or start with no Theme and build a movie from scratch just you your clips.

I had the same problem...running mavericks OSX10.9.1 a new macbook pro retina no Idvd ..ridiculous they still ship imovie ....so what do they think you are going to do next ...facebook, youtube ..very shortsighted ..simpl copy it on usb stick from another machine & simply transfer it over ...works fine
