MacBook Pro 2010 15": Black Screen and Crashes; passes video/hardware test

Hi,

For the last several months, my MacBook Pro 2010 15" has been crashing consistently on seemingly random occasions. When I open a new browser tab, start running an iOS simulator in XCode, or try to play HD video, the MacBook Pro's screen will turn black and force a hard restart. I also have Windows 7 on BootCamp, which also produces a black screen intermittently, but restores and blames the problem on an NVidia card. I am aware of the issue at: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4088, and have gone to the Apple Store regarding the problem, but their video and hardware tests do not detect a problem.

What could be causing this problem? It is extremely annoying and frustrating. Apple has offered to ship it to their warehouse to repair it for $300, but perhaps there is a simpler solution. All thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Finally someone else with my exact same issue.

I had the the same issue myself and apple wont do anything Im a different store soon to see if theyll be more helpful as the other one just tossed me off. I have ran both test once with no luck as everything passed same as you. Now I notice that you dont even have any drivers or kext loaded that are the same as mine plus as its effecting the bootcamp it wont be an unsupported kext issue like the "genius" tried to blame it on. I personally figured it was the bootcamp issue as it started in windows but after upgrading to maverick to see if it would fix it the issue got worse as now it effects the mac side as well.

I can actually cause the system to GPU panic finally on command by running NFS underground 2 as it seems that its menu like to switch between GPUs alot and will be taking it to a store to show the issue off as well.

Now heres our issue I have tried

unloaded all unneeded kext

reseting SMC/pram

Cleaning the system physicall

reinstalling both OS

full driver updates that I could find.

All have so far have not fixed my issue either I had attempted those even before contacting apple for the test as I knew exactly that was what the "genius" was going to say. My issue is I dont think he realized when I was talking to him that I had in fact tried all possible options already as I have been working with macs in enterprise deployments for 4 years and have been a computer tech for 10 years he just said "maybe you should reinstall the OS" which i had already told him I had preformed already and that it was also affecting the windows side as well which shouldnt be affected by a kext or driver on the mac side outside of bootcamp drivers after that he just walked off from me.

I have spent the past 2 months trying everything possible to fix the issue I can come up with beside rebuilding the logicboard by hand which since i was already past the 3 year mark when i upgraded and triggered the issue I think apple isnt going to play nicely.

Now I can tell you what is exactly your issue. We both have bad GPUs or atleast the unit that allows for switching between the 2 GPUs within the system. This is part of the TS4088 issue but for some reason our machines pass the test that should in fact detect a bad card unless the test itself is flawed and we're near the end of the run.

I am wondering if we should possible start a google group as we all might want to contact apple as a group as it seems there might be another person as well with our issue and just like their logicboard maybe the test is flawed itself or this might be another hardware issue all together.

Really our only differences is that I have cuda installed for work/school to render videos I have to shoot for assignments on my mac side.

I would try and see if you could possible get a free open source game and play that on your windows side. Now I know theres a known error with the timeout of nvidia cards on windows 7 with cuda(https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/459869/cuda-programming-and-performance /-quot-display-driver-stopped-responding-and-has-recovered-quot-wddm-timeout-det ection-and-recovery-/) so try and avoid any games that might use cuda or physx if you can. I only have the stock nvidia drivers installed on my windows side and can actually cause those black screens on command using NFS U2 plus if they sometimes lead to a GPU panic/ reboot with no BSOD. I would like to know if you can cause this reboot issue as well.
