i have a new ipad and stupid as it may sound I cannot physically plug the charger in to the ipad. Can I damage the ipad if I force the charger into the port?

Yes.
Be careful when you do it the first 20 to 30 times, things will start loosening after that.
If you have force it so hard that you're worried about it breaking I'd bring it to the Apple Store and let them have a look.
I need to charge my new ipad but I am not sure if I can damage the connection if I force it into the ipad. Is there a knack to getting it into the port?
