Installed 10.1 and started to playing with it. Cannot turn on skimming, snapping, audio skimming, clip skimming etc in ether the menu or the buttons. The button turns blue for a fraction of a second when I click on it, but won't stay blue.

Can you verify your OS version? Your tagline shows 10.6.4. 10.9.x is required for FCP X 10.1. You probably haven't updated your tagline.
I would guess those settings won't stick because there's a problem with your FCP X preferences file. Either a permissions or corruption problem. Try moving this file "com.apple.FinalCut.plist" out of User/Library/Preferences and restart FCP X.

Have you tried rebooting? When I installed 10.1 it had some 'quirks' which were resolved that way.
I have tried rebooting 4-5 times at least.
Trash preferences?
I had this problem, and lost some other featres too.
As I recall, the only short term way to fix it is by creating a new user on the mac and working from there.

Thanks. Logging out and going to another user worked for skimming, etc., but of course there is nothing in the library.
At least in a pinch, I can do this if I want to start a new project. There has to be a better solution.
After hours on the phone with Apple, we finally tried deleting ALL the preferences--not just FCPX and everything works now. Of course I have to rebuild my preferences and now I can't get Microsoft Word to work.
I can only imagine your frustration is hitting new levels by now.
Your situation has me worried. I have a late 2012 iMac i7 similarly configured to yours and am on the verge of upgrading to Mavericks and FCPX 10.1. Last week I upgraded my MBP and that worked with minimal bumps along the way. But your issue sounds more major and a few other posters have also reported problems with late model iMacs.

I've just fixed this problem. I used Pro Maintenance Tools 'Housekeeping' app and did a comprehensive clean. Empty the trash. Restart. Fixed.
Just felt I should chip in - I downloaded Pro Maintenance Tools Trial and neither the "Housekeeping" App nor "Quick Fix" managed to cure the snapping (and numerous other) faults on my FCP X system.
Maybe I did something wrong - I'll keep trying the various apps within the package and report my findings here.

Just wondering if anyone has found a solid solution to this problem? I have been experiencing loss of buttons and snapping recurring about every week. I have to trash all the prefs of all my applications to get my buttons back. But after a week or so, it happens again. I would like to narrow it down to the exact file that's causing the problem. Is it an issue with my user profile? And if so why is Fcpx so closely tied to these other prefs files? I am on a first gen MBPr, 16gb ram. When I installed mavericks I did a clean install and transferred applications with time machine. I was having this problem ML with 10.0.9 as well. I was hoping that 10.1 would have fixed it but it didn't.
I had the same problem on my computer.
I fixed it by deleting the "com.apple.FinalCutPro.[host-ID-string].plist" file from ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost folder, restarting the computer, and emptying the Trash before starting FCPX 10.1.
