Q: Airdrop not showing contacts on same wi-fi network

I have an iPhone 5S.  Most of the time when I try to use Airdrop, it doesn't show anybody being available on the network.  This occurs though we both have Airdrop turned on for contacts and we're on the same wi-fi network.  I did try powering my phone off and then on, which worked once but not again.  Anybody else having this issue?

    AirDrop is a BlueTooth function.

BT only broadcasts about 30 -40 feet and both devices need to have it enabled.  You'll also need to assure that all devices are AirDrop capable and are accepting transmissions form you as either "Contacts Only" or "Everybody."

Check the troubleshooting section near the bottom:

It suggests turning on Bluetooth as well as WiFi.

AirDrop uses the bluetooth to broadcast availability and negotiate the connection.

Wifi is used for the data transfer.

    Both must be turned on.

Open notifications, touch airdrop and see if you have contacts only or everyone checked.

Thanks for your reesponses but:  All of our devices are Airdrop-capable.  All had Bluetooth on.  All were on the same wi-fi network.  All were located in the same room.  All devices had Airdrop turned on for Contacts.

My friend only showed up on Airdrop onlly after I turned Airdrop off on my friend's iPad and turned it back on.   Once before, the only thing that worked was powering off my iPhone 5s and turning it back on.  Something seems amiss here . . .
