MBPr 13" - choppy/laggy/jerky HDTV playback

I have now, for a while searched around for others experiening this following problem, but I seems to not be in luck. I therefore ask here. I hope for your help.

I own a MBP retina 13", 8gb ram, i5 2.4, HD 4000, OS X 10.9.1I have tried on several occasions to hook it up to our samsung 5 series flat panel via HDMI. Whenever I play mkv's, avi's, mp4's etc. from my external HD, the video on the display appears laggy and jerky. It's not hugely obnoxius but it does bug me.

Any ideas on what the issue may be? Have anyone experienced similar issues?
