I am trying to activate a new ipod touch. The activation server cannot be reached. Is this a common issue? Is there anything else I can try?

No. But it's Christmas day, I'd imagine 1,000,000 others are trying to activate at the exact same time. That puts stress on the servers. Try again tomorrow or the next day.
