Q: I setup new 27" iMac incorrectly. How do I start set up all over again?
My old iMac is running 10.6.8. When setting up my new iMac (Mavericks), I migrated from an external Time Machine backup drive. When asked what I wanted migrated, the screen had all three buttons on as a default, including "settings", and I proceeded. After about 2.5 hours the migration was complete. When I tried to use the computer, things started to seem wonky. Crashplan wanted a Java update, I was offered the update, but I was then told there was an error. I had also received messages about an error connecting to my network, even though I appeared to have successfully opened Google Chrome and Safari. However, when I tried the Apple support pages on the new iMac, I got warnings that the pages' certificates weren't uptodate; and when I tried using the support pages, the pages looked peculiar, some in plain text, and I couldn't proceed.
Restarting the iMac and repairing permissions made no difference.
During the migration, it suddenly dawned on me that I may have made a mistake. Previously, an Apple Store Genius had walked me through the migration process and said that I should migrate applications and files, but suggested against "settings" as that might throw things off. I suspect he was right - although I don't know that all my problems are caused by the migrated settings, it seems prudent to start the whole setup process again, avoiding the migration of "settings". I can't find simple instructions how to do this on Apple's support pages.
Would appreciate some guidance. Will try calling Apple asap, but right after Xmas that may be difficult.
Help appreciated.
