How can I get iphone contacts to icloud?

I have no contacts on my icloud account.

However, I have a considerable amount of contacts saved on my iphone. I want to import these iphone contacts to icloud. Yet, when I click 'merge' on the icloud part of settings, it wipes all of the contacts on my phone as I have none in icloud.

Please help if you can !!!

Log into iCloud with your ID and disable Contacts. Choose Keep on iPhone. Then enable contacts and choose merge when the option appears.

that does not help, even though it sounds a logic fix. It changes NOTHING.
