Highlight the Maxtor.
Go to the top tab Erase and click on it.
Go to Volume Format and choose Mac OS Extended(journaled).
Click Erase at the bottom.
This should give you a fresh disk to work with. I wonder if the HD came with Winders format.

Oh yeah, if you are using Firewire(recommended), the S.M.A.R.T. is not supported but the drive can still be used. I have a S.M.A.R.T. capable ext.
