Pairing disconnect

I have a brand new iPhone5s and a new MacBookPro and have attempted to pair over Bluetooth. What happens is I see the identical number on both devices, and a Connect, but then after about 3 seconds a Disconnect.

This has happened repeatedly, and I am an experienced user and cannot figure out what's happening. I am using the same wi fi network on both devices, if that matters.
