Unable to email btinternet.com address as no PTR record found on Apple server. Any ideas?

I created two accounts on iCloud for my two daughters today. One is able to send emails to a btinternet.com email address and the other isn't. The one that isn't i've tried on several devices and iCloud website and still the same issue. The message says that the bt email server isn't receiving a PTR record from the IP address (which i've checked and is an Apple address).

Anyone seen this before and have any idea how to resolve? I spoke with an Apple support guy on the phone and he said to contact BT, but as the account is receiving emails from the other iCloud address i'm suspecting I won't get much from them either.

I've been on the phone to both BT and Apple this morning. BT told me that it was an Apple problem. I then phoned Apple. The chap I spoke to investigated and called me back. After speaking to someone at BT who knew what he/she was talking about he was told that BT are aware of the issue, it is a problem at their end and that they are working on a solution. Apparently it doesn't just affect icloud.com addresses (a post above mentions cox.net addresses).

So I suppose all we can do is set back and wait!

We're having the same issue with an account also created on 26-Dec. I also spoke to Apple and was given the same advice to call BT, but was additionally told he would raise a ticket with the engineers and give me a call back on Tuesday afternoon. I'll let you know what I learn. Here's what the error message looks like from BT:

Reason: Rejection greeting returned by server.

Diagnostic code: smtp;521 smtpin23.bt.ext.cpcloud.co.uk Service not available - no PTR record for 17.164.101.34

Remote system: dns;mx.bt.***5.cpcloud.co.uk (TCP|17.164.101.34|38223|65.20.0.49|25) (smtpin23.bt.ext.cpcloud.co.uk Service not available - no PTR record for 17.164.101.34)

In addition to BT Internet, we also see the same response from cox.net, but this one provides more information:

Diagnostic code: smtp;554 fed1rmimpi112 cox 17.164.101.12 rejected - no rDNS - Refer to Error Codes section at http://postmaster.cox.net/confluence/display/postmaster/Error+Codes for more information.

Remote system: dns;mx.west.cox.net (TCP|17.164.101.12|32834|68.6.19.3|25)

So far, the only two Apple servers we've seen affected are .34 and .12, but that doesn't mean there aren't more. Stew, are those the same servers being rejected in your messages?

Hi,

I've had same problem with a number of different email services including AOL.

It's 17.110.78.41 for me and 17.164.101.12 for my wife.

It looks like incomplete configuraiton by Apple, perhaps they are using some new mail servers?

However it does look like something has changed, doing a test on my Linux box:

$ dig +short -x 17.164.101.12

st14p23im-asmtp001.me.com.

$ dig +short -x 17.110.78.41

mr11p24im-asmtp001.me.com.

$ dig +short -x 17.164.101.34

st14p23im-asmtp002.me.com.

Hopefully this is fixed now.

Apple did not call me on Tuesday as promised and I've not yet had a response to the email I sent yesterday evening, which is quite disappointing.

Mike, I'm surprised BT suggested it's a problem at their end. I understand that their server is the one rejecting the message, but it appears it's because insufficient information is being transmitted from the Apple server. The fact that Cox (in the US) are also rejecting messages suggests that it's an issue on Apple's side. Have you had any response from BT?

Also, a question for everyone: on what day was your affected iCloud account created? Stew (Stewart?) and I both created accounts on 26-Dec that are having this problem. Were the other accounts also created on the same day?

That's the exact message received. Problem still occurring and it's even when replying to a message from the btinternet account. It can send to my yahoo account without issue. Have you had any more luck yet?

I am having exactly the same issue with my sons new iPad, sending emails to a BT email address we get the error message:

Diagnostic code: smtp;521 smtpin18.bt.ext.cpcloud.co.uk Service not available - no PTR record for 17.164.101.78.41

He can receive emails but unable to reply without getting the smtp 521 error message. He can send emails to apple email address and does not receive an error message.

I have an apple account and can send emails succesfully from my iPhone and iPad

I would be intrested to know why he is getting this error message and how it can be fixed.

I have the same problem. I set up apple email address for my mother 21.1.2015 and she is unable to email my primary @btinternet.com address but she can send to my gmail address. I have noticed that some of you have had the problem fixed. Do you know what you did to get it fixed. I have spoken to BT who say it's not them. Is there someone else I should be telling about this. I'm annoyed as the advice I received from the Apple Store was to set my mother up with an iCloud email address as it would be simpler!!
