Check your Auto-Lock settings:

Settings>General>Auto-Lock and change to 2 minutes (or other) to have the unit enter screen lock after that time.

Note that normally your iPad does NOT shut off but will enter auto-lock mode which is similar to sleep mode on the PC/Mac. To fully power it off, press and HOLD the power lock/unlock button at the top and follow the prompts to power off.

If the unit is still not entering Auto-Lock at the predetermined amount of time, try a reset:

Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)

1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.

2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.
