1st gen Ipad updates

My wife has the 1st gen Ipad and most of the apps today will not install because it need to update the software, but when updating it says its up to date with 5.1. Why will it not update?

Sorry, but 5.1.1 is the highest for that model.

Because it's incapable of running iOS 6 or newer.

Unfortunately no. Apples new trade in program is for iPad 2's or newer.
