I am having trouble updating my 1st gen iPad to iOS 7?

iPad, iOS 5.0.1

Correct, as 5.1.1 is the highest possible for that model.

It's incapable of running iOS 6 and newer.

The iPad 1 can only be updated to IOS 5.1.1.
