Please launch the Activity Monitor application in the same way you launched Console. Select the CPU tab. There's a search box in the toolbar. Search for "Messages" and then "imagent" (without the quotes.) If either one is found, please post a screenshot of the Activity Monitor window. I posted instructions earlier. If they're not found, try to launch Messages and look again.

Select the Messages entry in the process list and then click the button marked with an X in the top left corner of the window. When prompted, click Force Quit. The entry should disappear. Wait a few seconds, then launch Messages again.

If it again hangs, double-click the entry in Activity Monitor to open the inspection window. In that window, select the Open Files and Ports tab. Copy the text shown and paste it into a reply.

    Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /var/folders

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "folders" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Reboot and test.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

    Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

This story isn't making sense, and when a story doesn't make sense, it's often because there is a bad sector on the boot volume. To overcome that problem, you have to erase the volume and restore from a backup. I suggest you do it as follows.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

When you reboot, the Setup Assistant will launch to take you through the initial setup process. Follow the prompt to transfer the data from one of your backups. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
