you can always upgrade ram after the fact, even on a mac mini, though on mac mini it is not considered a user-installable part. a half gig of ram is fine. but if you are considering keeping up with the times and think you will be upgrading to leopard, i would increase your hardware capacity. that is the natural progression of things. fairly soon, what is now 512 mb of ram will act more like 256 mb of ram with newer, more complex, more demanding software. that is how software and hardware coevolve. i would recommend apple ram. it costs more, but is more reliable, and ram is a very important part of the computer. when it is bad it can have an adverse affect on other components and the software. I will mainly be using it for basic tasks: Music storage, email, the occasional movie and music composition. Should i upgrade to 1 gig? and if so, could i buy the ram aftermarket and get the mac store to install it for me?

I have the Core Duo with 512MB and I don't really think it's enough. I don't use mine full time (it's connected to a tv tuner and runs skype) but when I do use it for an extended period of time (using mail, safari, itunes etc) it feels a little sluggish. It's OK just for watching TV/DVD tho.
