transferring to a Macbook Pro Retina

I am trying to transfer the contents of my Windows 7 Laptop (64 bit) to my new MacBook Pro Retina. I have the two connected with an ethernet cable and have disabled both firewalls as well as the antivirus on the old laptop but it doesn't seem to be working. Advice?

Assuming you are following the directions properly, I would try it again. All that would be transferred is the user account with its content. Be sure you have checked what you want transferred.

The advice is not to use Migration Assistant, it's how to use it properly. There are two involved. One running on the Mac and the other running on the PC (which you must download.)

Thanks Kappy but I've been using both. Do you know if there's something that I have to do regarding the ethernet-USB adapter before I use it? I bought it specifically for this purpose and I just plugged it in and am using it. As I think I said, the user account gets transferred pretty quickly (~1 minute) but it has no contents. I'm sure the problem is in that areae some where because when I click "continue" with the box checked for the 0 kb user account transferred folder, I get a message that the connection was lost. Click continue again and it says my data has been successfully migrated and is ready to use.. When I check, nothing has been transferred. .
