Are you turning on "Mirroring" on your iPad when you select Airplay ?

If your screen on your iPad looks similar to this iPod screen below, then I would restart your iPad by holding down the power button at the top and the home button until you see the White Apple.

It will restart.

See if that works for you.

That menu choice is on your iPad in the Control Center. Not the Apple TV
