Direct Ethernet Between PC and Mac

I'm trying to connect my g3 iMac (panther 10.3.9) to my pc using direct ethernet between the two. Apple says they should just automatically recognize each other but they won't. When I try to ping the pc's ip it won't work. All I want to do is send over the music and photos. Anyone know what the problem is?

Are you using a Crossover Ethernet cable?

Are both machines assigned IP addresses on the same subnet?

I didn't think Mac's needed a crossover cable. They have this feature where it will change the connection or something. Plus the Apple switch thing says all you need is a regular ethernet cable.

I'm not sure about the ip adresses how do I change that? And would that effect trying to add music and photos into iTunes and iPhoto?
