iTunes in Mac Air will not move pdf files in Books to my iPhone

I was able to move several pdf files into iBooks on my Mac Air with Mavericks and then select them in iTunes for synching to my iPhone 5, but they would not appear in iBooks on my iPhone.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.10)
