Contacts photo - Mavericks bug?

Howdy folks, I'm experiencing this rather weird problem.

When I try assigning a photo to a contact (via edit contact, choose photo from 'faces'), the end result shows an awkward section of the selected photo rather than displaying the photo as is.

To elucidate...

If I choose a photo from faces (previously imported to iPhoto), zoom to the desired extent (say, till the face is in focus) and click 'Done', it isn't saved as such. Instead, the contact's photo shows the forehead or some other part of the chosen photo.

Removing the said photo and replacing it with another (for the same contact) doesn't work. Neither does deleting that contact, creating it again, and re-adding the same/different photo.

Also, if I must add, this happens at random. Some contact photos do show up the way I want them to (zoomed or otherwise), while some others face the issue I mentioned above.

Any suggestions, please?
