10.4.7 update problems. Some Apps won't launch. Disk Util brokem...

Please help a brother out. Since the 10.4.7 upgrade-

Safari won't launch. Disk Util won't mount any .dmg ("The following disk images failed to mount" -- "device not configured") I can copy songs but I can't copy videos to my iPOD.

I've read through the forums and I can't find a fix for me. I can't use the "combo" update because I can't mount a .dmg. -Oh yeah, I'm fairly computer literate, but not like a lot of you Mac guys here.

Advice?

iMac Intel Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2 GHz 1GB RAM

hi there--

i would try resetting the smc. do this by shutting the computer completely down, then removing all peripherals. then unplug the power cord from where it enters the power supply at the back of the machine. wait half a minute or so. then plug it back in. then attempt to go to disk utility. select the macintosh hd and see if it will allow you to repair permissions. then boot to the install disk holding the c and run disk repair. do this by going forward one window in the installer, and then find the utilities window up at the top of the screen, and then select disk utility. select the macintosh hd, and then "repair disk". after a few times, this should say "no repairs necessary". if you are able to repair permissions and the disk after the smc reset, i would try loading the combo update again. Thanks. I reset the smc. I repaired the permissions and there was no problem there. I can't repair the disk because it is greyed-out. I assume its because it is the startup disk. I don't have a CD to start from. There wasn't one included with my Mac. I have a 10.4.0 CD but my Intel mac can't use this (too early) This is a global problem on my Mac. Is there any way to revert back to 10.4.6?

it is quite a problem to not have the install disk that is for the operating system. without it, you cannot go back to 10.4.7. try booting holding down the apple and the s and then type in the following command--

/sbin/fsck -fy (hit return)

run that through until hopefully it says that the volume appears to be okay. (maybe 2 or 3 times. let me know what it says.) also try going to /library/startupitems folder and removing anything in there. and also go to system preferences > accounts and remove anything in login items. do this by selecting the item and then clicking the delete sign. let me know if any of this is helping matters. OK I tried that- HD is OK. I don't know why there wasn't an install included in my box?? These problems all started immediately after the update from .6 to .7. I think it must be a global problem. I've read somewhere (MacFixit??) that the MacIntel upgrade had some missing items.??

Thanks in advance for any ideas
Jeff
PS. I also have bus issues- I have to restart the Mac in order to mount iPODs plus I can copy songs but no video to iPODS. THis Mac was very solid until the 10.4.7 upgrade. Now a bucket of problems.

ah sorry, of course you can't update. have you tried
creating a new user to see if you can launch safari
there?? go to system preferences > accounts and then
click the plus sign. (you probably know how to do
this, but just in case). it's not recommended to use
install disks from another computer. you should get
your own disks for sure anyway. [ 8 ) ]

I tried the new user trick.. no good. The disks are from an intelmac which is exactly the same as mine. I think the update to 10.4.7 is flawed. I've read some other people having some of the same problems as me. 😟 No fix yet.

Thanks for you help. I'd be glad for any new ideas.

I tried that. MS Word was the only program that was fixed this way. I've got several other problems. I've read that this upgrade was missing some files and other people are complaining about OpenGL (? whatever that is) and Bus issues. I was rock solid until the update and then BAM!

My biggest issue now seems to be that I am unable to mount .dmg files. Without that capability I can't install the combo update, which I've heard may fix this problem.

Thanks for your input though.. Cheers!

I always trash the cache folders, especially the system library and top level library, and leave my own.

If you already have Tiger Cache Cleaner or something they also will rebuild launch services and some other features that might be of help.

On a PPC you can install Applejack which will let you perform some maintenance from the command line in Single User Mode.

Sometimes it is necessary to move, rename your Preferences folder to get things working, or create a new account.

Great idea! Can I trash all of the caches or do I need to keep certain ones? Where can I find Tiger Cache Cleaner? Applejack?

Thanks
