Macbook Pro Retina: GPU changing to discrete in wrong situations?

On my 15" Macbook Pro Retina - OSX 10.9, I have noticed that my gpu is changing to discrete (NVIDIA GT 650) rather than maintaining integrated graphics (Intel 4000) in non graphics intensive situations. For example, simple web browsing - no video, will activate the discrete graphics, the same happens with iTunes. This tends to deplete my battery life alot more rapidly and creates more heat buildup. Is there a reason why this is happening? Is it preventable? Suggestions?

Thanks,
