As of the shipping of the Late 2011 model, Apple no longer ships true 'user manuals' - just 'Quick Start' guides.
Don't ask me why!

New Macs do not come with manuals. Instead, you can get a Quick Start guide from the Apple site > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1664/en_US/macbook_pro_retina-15-in ch-late-2013_qs.pdf
OS X is quite easy to use and learn, so Apple does not provide a manual anymore. If you need help using your computer, have a look at the articles and how-to's created by Apple > http://www.apple.com/support/macbasics
It may be easy for long time apple users but it is NOT easy for those of us who just purchased our first Mac! I have looked at every video I can find and read everything the resembled a user guide and there are many questions that I can not locate answers for. It can take days trying to track down the information needed. Wonder if the person who decided not to include a manual or at least put one online for first time users, would find it easy to become a first time HVAC service tech, without so much as a manual to guide them? That is the biggest problem with computer people, they forget real quickly what it is like to be a newby. Thanks for answering this question as I have been trying to find a User's Guide for two days now. Didn't want to call them to ask a dumb question but now I see that I'm not the dumb one! Please pass this on to whoever came up with the brilliant idea not to include a proper manual with a complexed piece of hardware!!!!
I agree - even though the manuals would never get you a 'genius' status on first read, they certainly pointed you in the right direction, giving you enough knowledge to at least ask the 'right' questions.
Let Apple know what you think about the 'missing manual' by getting in touch with them at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html.
Maybe you should get one of the "Missing Manual" guides for Mavericks from Amazon. I use them for many Adobe products (which no longer come with manuals, either, of course).
Good luck,
Clinton
Thank you so much for your suggestions, I will do both.

Good Lord! That Dummies guide is almost 8 years old! I think that the OP could certainly pay for something much better than that!

Good point. I skimmed the TOC but did not notice the date. Now wonder it is free online.
