Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Its just happened to our 27" imac. My wife was just sitting at her desk using the imac when she heard a load crack and the monitor gave in. This is not what I expected from a $3500 piece of machinery. Its a design flaw so I wont be expecting to pay for the repair, but regardless this will be a substantial inconvenience as my wife uses this for work.

    Very dissapointed

I have AppleCare and in Australia (not sure about anyone else) you can ask them to service it in your home if you live within a 50km radius of the GPO. Regardless, I feel very confident that Apple would not let a purchaser of their flagship iMac just swing in the breeze.

It's lucky I'm a wine drinker. This cork sets the screen angle at a good one to view for me. Cannot easily adjust it though!Tilt screen.jpg

Add me too. Woke up to find my iMac hanging its head.  This is a design failure and needs to be fixed for free.  I will see if I can get it done for nothing as some have or else resort to my "toolmaker" fixture.

add me to the club. iMac 27" just fell down, we were out and came back to see this. I yelled at all the kids thinking they did something, now I am relieved they didn't, but the **** happened.

I'm in Sweden, there are no Apple ships in Ulricehamn area, I received/bought it january 2014, and what the **** I do now?

(I moved from Croatia to Sweden couple of months ago...)

FFs. I thought one can rely on apple....

Just heard the crack and saw screen flop over.  Mac used for work but screen never adjusted.  27 inch late 2012.  Very disappointed as much by the likely downtime as by the inevitable hassle of having it fixed.  This is my third iMac and the most expensive.  No AppleCare but clearly a design flaw that Apple should accept responsibility for.

Just happened to me a few minutes ago. Quite unexpectedly, I might say... for a 2,500 EUR device. I think mine is 14 months old.

I live in Bucharest, Romania (EU) and the official Apple representative I've bought it from (iStyle) has developed a shady reputation lately, so I'm not sure what to do about it... They'll probably ask for 500 EUR to fix is, so I guess for now I'll go for the tennis-ball temporary solution.

Anyway, I'm quite displeased about this, so I don't think I'd recommend Apple (and especially the iMacs) to anybody soon. You'd expect more for such an expensive product.

Unfortunately this just happened to me as well as on my work computer.  Came into the office this morning and the screen was pointing downward.  Unfortunately the machine is 14 months old and out of warranty.  Can anyone confirm that Apple is still conducting this repair at no cost on out of warranty machines?

EU minimum warranty is 24 months ( 2 years), my iMac leg was fixed authorised Apple service, with out any cost.

they need to order new spring system first, and I did not have to leave my iMac there, so when new part arrived, it took one business day to fix.

This happened to me about an hour ago, unfortunately it's a holiday today, I've made an appointment with my local store but they can't see me until  Wednesday next week.  I tried calling Customer Care but they are closed today.

Is this something I need to do every 6 months or so?  I am really disappointed with Apple over this, I paid a bundle for this late 2013 iMac and I have not even had it a full year.  Of course I Have AppleCare but I am really ****** that  this is because of a Plastic Washer!  I am seriously considering a different machine the next time I 'm looking for a new computer.  I put up with my previous iMac and it's highly reflective screen for 3 years until I could finally afford to upgrade to this new iMac, now I discover that it's got a vital flaw and it is almost a joke now with various posts showing how they are coping with the problem by propping it up with pens, tubes and other things.  Not that I don't appreciate the pictures.  I'm using a plastic square coaster that I hope stays in place, it's still not that great and I expect it to fall out anytime. But it is just sad that a Machine this Expensive has such a Flaw.

now I'm stepping down from my Soapbox, I hope I didn't ruin anybody else's good Friday.

OK. I talked to apple EU on phone. They enlisted me for exception without problem. Just drove it today to authorized reseller and should be done next week free of charge.
