Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

I too have had to lug this heavy thing to an Apple Store, it is amazing how heavy it got as I carried it by the Box handle to the other end of the Mall!

I will be sending Apple a nasty email regarding this problem, I have not had this thing for a full year and this vital part snaps.  What were they thinking installing such a cheap part?

I think I deserve some compensation for this, it is going to take 7-10 days for the repair and I am forced to use an old Mac Mini hooked up through my TV.

For the money I paid for my iMac I deserve a lot better, we all do!

Per other posts in this thread, Apple is repairing broken hinges "outside of warranty". When mine broke I called Apple Customer Support, 1 (800) 676-2775, and explained the problem. The CSR knew exactly what I was talking about. He scheduled a Genius Bar appointment at a nearby Apple store (Northwest U.S.). I called ahead explaining that I use my iMac for work and couldn't have it out of service for very long. They ordered the part and called me when it came in. I left my iMac with them on a Friday evening and it was ready the following Monday morning.

The initial invoice showed a $28 charge when I dropped it off, but there was no charge when I picked it up.

If you don't have an Apple store locally there are posts noting that authorized Apple repair facilities are taking care of it...although a few have said that the repair facility wanted to charge them (or did). I'd certainly take it up with Apple if you run into that sort of thing.

    YMMV of course.

    Hope that helps.

Please tell me the exact area of the "Terms of Agreement" that I have gone against?  I would like to know if you are an actual moderator?  I do have legitimate concerns about an Apple Product and would like to voice the troubles I have had getting Apple's problem corrected.  I certainly can't see how I have "Ranted" anymore than anyone else on this forum.

I do however need to ask if you have had this problem, and do you represent Apple?  If you have not had this problem, then why are you worried about my posts?

I just want to get my machine back and have a guarantee that I won't have to go through any more hassles again, including hassles where I make an effort to tell people who don't have to actually read about my hassles.

If this bothers anybody please ignore.  I have over $2000.00 invested in my computer, I feel that gives me a voice!

Sorry if that offends anybody on this forum who might take offence.

    Sure:

    Submissions

    1. Stay on topic. Apple Support Communities is here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
      1. Speculations or rumors about unannounced products.
      2. Discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions.
    2. Be polite. Everyone should feel comfortable reading Submissions and participating in discussions. Apple will not tolerate flames or other inappropriate statements, material, or links. Most often, a "flame" is simply a statement that is taunting and thus arbitrarily inflammatory. However, this also includes those which are libelous, defamatory, indecent, harmful, harassing, intimidating, threatening, hateful, objectionable, discriminatory, abusive, vulgar, obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit, or offensive in a sexual, racial, cultural, or ethnic context.
    3. Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Constructive feedback about product features is welcome as well. If your Submission contains the phrase "I'm sorry for the rant, but…" you are likely in violation of this policy.

I never said I was a moderator, I simply said I was going to report your post to one. You have been advised on these forums before that Apple does not read or participate in these forums. If you want to communicate to Apple please do so on the appropriate form of communication which is www.apple.com/feedback

    Yeesh!

I don't ever recall being "Advised" on these forums before!  Since I can't respond directly to you, I will no longer post on this thread, I have  far more legitimate concerns than you seem to have with me, therefore please go ahead and report my "Breech" of whatever you deem to see fits, within this forum.  I will be talking to Apple with any concerns or inconvenience I have experienced, I may post again on this forum when I am back on my old machine after the repair.  In the meantime I am done wasting other  people's legitimate concerns with the exact same problem that I have.  The fact that we are discussing ethics means that the original topic of this thread has been lost.  I do however object to being "moderated" by one who claims not to be a moderator, but that is my own opinion, and I don't wish to discuss ThaD any further, please Report, Don't reply, (Like I just did... sigh)

This problem occurred to my 27" iMac in October of last year. I heard a loud cracking sound as if something heavy had fallen on to the tile floor. It was some time later before I noticed the screen would not remain tilted at the angle I set. As I live in Australia, even though the iMac was out of its warranty period, Apple repaired it free of charge due to our consumer laws that dictate that consumers should expect any reasonably expensive device to not malfunction within 3 years of purchase. As such, I did not purchase AppleCare within the first year as I no longer see the point when consumers are covered for 3 years anyway.

Anyway, so it has now been nearly 6 months since the repair, and alas another related problem has developed. I now notice that after adjusting the monitor to a certain angle, it will not preserve this adjustment for long period of time. After several hours the screen returns to its lowest possible tilt. It happens so gradually I do not notice it while using it, but when I go away and come back after a while it is obvious. It is as if the spring they used in the repair is not strong enough to hold the weight of the monitor. I'm not sure whether I want to be without the iMac for another 3 or 4 days again!

Australia's consumer laws aren't quite so cut-and-dried, it depends on price paid compared to similar items in the market (a $5000 TV would be expected to last longer than a similarly specced $500 TV), previous experience with similar appliances (a modern fridge shouldn't have major malfunctions within a decade, just like in the olden days). If I can quote The Castle (as any good Aussie knows), it's about the vibe.

Ask Apple to see if they can get a part in for you before you take it in for repair.

Yes you're right about consumer laws not being so cut and dried. But after paying about $3500 for a maxed-out iMac, I would expect it to last for at least 3 years without problems. Yes "the vibe" is where it's all at!

I like the idea of asking them to get the part in first before taking it in for repair.

Take it easy, I think markfrommississauga is entitled to feel frustrated - there are a lot of very frustrated people in this post that are completely entitled to feel that way. I completely agree with him - this will cost my wife earnings, this is specifically what we did not expect from a very expensive Apple product.

The replacement part is hardly significant. The design of the 2012 iMac is such that the labor cost is orders of magnitude greater than the  part. No one wants to open the machine for this purpose, but the cheapest offer I got was $600.

Happened to my 27" iMac yesterday. Wasn't even near it and I heard a crack and the monitor dropped. iMac is just over a year old. Thankls to all for the encouraging posts. Nice to know this was not an isolated issue.

I wish there was a way to message people directly instead of posting more off topic material here.  I have not received an email and my post has not been removed (yet), Perhaps we can get back on topic?

    Thank you

Perhaps that is true, however to-date your posts have only been to rant which is off-topic.
