Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Well all I can say is how reassuring it is that I am not the only one that has heard that dreaded Crack sound and the screen dropping! This does appear to be a design flaw as all the posts I have read on this issue seem to have 27" iMacs. iMac is just over 1 year old - have applecare though. Was not even moving the iMac, just crack and that was that. Disappointed Apple .

    Gobstoppers,

Glad you have AppleCare, if you are in the US or UK and are within 50 miles of an AASP you can request in-home service by calling AppleCare. Worst case you will have to go in though, however when you get there ask for help moving the computer from your vehicle to the store.

Also, you may want to consider sending Apple your feedback (they don't read or participate is these forums) by posting at www.apple.com/feedback.

    Good luck

In Australia you can also get in-home service.

Glad to hear that and thanks for the 411, I didn't know in-home service was available in Australia..

I have read the post where you pointed out to me the guidelines, I then tried to stay away until there was an irrelevant posting which I felt I needed to reply to, I have continually asked that we drop this, and go back on topic.  If this is indeed another "Rant" than aren't you and the other person "Ranting" by replying.

I want to stay on topic as much as the next person!

I am hoping to post again on this thread Only when my iMac is back from Repairs.  I am familiar with the Terms of use and wish to refrain from any more discussion that is not on topic:  Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Please everybody ignore me and continue.

    Thank you,

Same thing just happened to me. 27in iMac 2013. I wonder if someone plotted out when these issues were reported along a timeline. the graph would probably look exponential. Disappointed apple. I have a large project until June so I probably won't bring it in until its finished.

Update: Took iMac in April 4th and picked up today - April 10th.  Cost was anywhere from $135 to $67 to $0.  I went with the ZERO $'s. If I hadn't got into a chat discussion with Josh from Apple support on-line, I think I would have had trouble getting this fixed for nothing from the Apple store I took it to for repair.

My suggestion is clear this upfront from Apple support on-line - they are great!

The Apple store I took mine to needs to get Android phones installed as they don't seem to get reception on their Apple phones - not even from the Apple support people on-line!! Called and called and called.....nodda!!

Fixed for now and we'll see if the same weak parts were the replacement. Time will tell.

    Good luck all!!

I finally got my iMac back today, they told me that an improved part had been installed, although I did not talk to the person who worked on it, he did assure me that Apple was aware of this problem, and the new "Mechanism" works differently, more tightly.

I take it that this means that the new part should last for the life of the machine.  I'm very happy about that!

I had the same issue happen to my iMac. Loud snap and iMac tilts all the way down. Will no longer hold at a higher tilt. I have an appointment later today. I will update here with any information that may be useful. I am a few months out of warranty at this point.

My repair was $35 for the part and $39 for the labor, but it was covered under AppleCare, that is in Canadian dollars.  Not terribly expensive for the time involved.

I would be careful about where the iDuck is placed, you don't want to block the vent in the back.  I originally used a small piece of wood that got almost the correct angle and it rested on the top of the power plug so it never slid out.

For everybody in the US in the same boat:

Call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-275-2273.  Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations.  Tell them exactly what you stated in your post.  See what CR can do for you.

Sorry, I do not know how CR works outside of the US or if there is such a department.

    GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the comment, the duck is located under the vent, such as a rubber material do not scratch the area. Hopefully the new part is of better quality than the previous one, is not for the money but for the first time must use premium materials and if they make a mistake inform all users without having to wait for the break. That says a lot about a company ...
