Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

It broke, 100 million dollar space shuttles can break. It will be fixed and then you can move on.

    Hi all,

Same here, after a "crack" sound, the screen falls down to his lowest inclinaison. I can't set it higher again.

I had the same Problem the last year (03 2014) and my Apple Reseller fixed it by changing some piece...

Now I'm not anymore covered by warranty. And I'm not sure, if they fix it again (and I will have to pay for this), that I won't encounter this problem each year.

Same thing just happened to me.  I had packed up my iMac in the original box, as we just moved, and when I took it out, as I was carrying it to the desk, I hear a loud "crack" and when I set the computer down, it won't stand straight.  I little peeve about this.  This was an expensive purchase, and I'll try to track down when I bought it.  I'm guessing it's just over a year old.  Very disappointing.

It is covered by warranty, just get it fixed and take a chill pill.

It is one month out of warranty.  Do you mean that there is a warranty on this part, even if it's out of warranty?  I'm going to take it in anyway and see what they will do.

After a long conversation with apple live chat, I decided to go the Mac Store in London.

    Very helpful and friendly staff.

No appointments are available for this week ( not sure if thats good or bad ) but I may get help if I go into early enough

He admitted to me that they are aware of the issue

Don't want to leave my Mac there , as I need it...but need to

Will let you know how it goes

When you take it to an Apple Store ask for the part to be replaced, Apple does not have an official policy however if you look at this thread you will find many customers that have had out of warranty machines covered. Using good manners is always helpful.

Was this meant to be funny? Do Americans talk to strangers like this?

I think the point goes something like this... There have been so many irate anti-Apple rants on this thread that going into an Apple store with that attitude will likely not get you as far (or as inexpensively) as being civil and professional.

True, and that does not only go for Apple Stores.

    Cheers

I too have joined the sagging screen on a late 2013 iMac 27".  I found a couple possible workarounds if not a better solution altogether.  One is called the Freedom Arm (https://youtu.be/P2Q53ZJ3RiE) and the other is a desk mount from MonoPrice (https://youtu.be/Rz4btMDrsNw)

Our version of the iMac does not have a user replaceable stand. Unfortunately, those solutions will not work.
