Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

If you are  in the USA or UK and within 50 miles of a AASP, then when you call AppleCare request this service. As I understand AppleCare if you meet these two criteria they will do in-home service but you have to ask for it.

I guess I am joinng the club. Was in my bedroom when a mysterious "pop" or "crack" was heard. Went to investigate; thought it was the heater or something. Then I glanced over at my beautiful iMAC 27" and noticed it facing downward. Almost cancelled my trip to 'Vivid" (if you're in Sydney, AUS you know what this is) Happened on 23rd of May, purchased at HN on 16th May 2015. Currently being propped up by two external hard drives. Thanks for all of the advice and it feels better; I guess knowing others are having this issue and not just my odd luck. I was considering purchasing the Apple Watch and a MAC Book, but may hold off for now. I am an old PC user and had vowed to switch and stick with MAC computers after my last pc failed. Currently have an IPAD and IPhone 6 plus, love them and have had no issues. Hope the resolution of the tilting screen can be resolved without drama as I am about a week out of warranty.

15 months later, it has happened to my wife's iMac again.

Has anyone received any out of warranty relief from Apple for this issue?

OH no!  That's really weird that they would replace it with the same weak part, if that's what happened.  I'm hoping that by now, they have made a sturdier piece as I'm going to have my first round done and hope not to have anything happen after Apple Care is up..

Sadly, I also have joined the club! I got my imac 27" in November 2013 so out of warranty and no Applecare. Just found the screen dropped down and unable to hold any tilt position anymore. Currently have a trainer propping it up. I will email Apple as I'm over 50 miles from nearest store and after seeing 22 pages on this discussion thread from 2013 - to date 2015, it's got to be an Apple problem. I am in EU so previous posts helpful, thank you.

Yes, too bad.  I always get apple care on my iMacs And has paid off big time.  I don't get it on some other things but it's all seemed to work out. They rebuilt my entire imac on the model prior to my current model. It had 3 months left on apple care and the DVD player went out but they ended up replacing entire works for some other sporadic screen issue.  The stand is frustrating because it's obviously a design flaw or weak part. Good luck.

I just got back from the local Apple store. Told them about the first repair under warranty and that it's happened again. They will repair my wife's out of warranty iMac for a $40 labor charge. I would have preferred free, but I'll take what I can get in this case.

June 5, 2015. This just happened to me. CRACK! and then my iMac display keeled over. Of course, my AppleCare just expired. Guess I'm out of luck here. I paid nearly $3K for this iMac two years ago and am not about to spend anymore for something that I DIDN'T CAUSE. What other avenues can I take? Fortunately for me, my iMac is on a raised platform so the tilt is not too much of a distraction, but knowing that there's a design or parts failure is disheartening. It would be cool if Apple provided a free fix for its loyal customers (I've been a Mac person since the late 80s) but business is business and like any corporation they care more about profits than providing any kind of support to its loyal clientele at no charge. Oh well....

Have you approached your local Apple Store about it? Be polite and who knows what they will do for you.

    Cheers

Apple can add mine to the list - just happened to me. December 2013 27" iMac stand just broke. Certainly a design flaw.

Just not strong enough for the weight of a 27" machine I suppose.

Cant do without my machine for 5 days, so will do one of the simpler fixes posted earlier.

It is very rare, but fixable. If you do noy wish to take it in for analysis/repair then there is little use complaining.

    Cheers

Oh I plan to... once my schedule clears up and don't need my iMac for a while, I will make an inquiry. Just didn't know if there were any alternatives. If it's simply a parts issue, perhaps I could easily replace it myself? I did see a YouTube video that showed how you can remove the stand from the display. Did anyone go to Apple and have it fixed without AppleCare? If so, how much did that cost? Seriously, my AppleCare just expired 2 months ago (paid for AC for 2 years and didn't extend it).

My stand failed on me last week. Took it to Apple Store in Leicester, UK and was pleasantly surprised that even though the unit is out of warranty and I don't have Applecare that the repair will be FOC (no parts or labour charge). Warranty Status on the Work Authorisation is Consumer Law Coverage(CL).

Downside, I have to wait 3-5 days for the turnaround.

I just had the same thing happen to a late 2012 27" iMac, so popped on line looking for a solution and found this VERY LONG thread! Sounds like it happens quite a bit, be interested to know if the Brand New 27" iMacs have the same weak part fitted as we have just bought a couple of those for the office. Instantly temp fixed with my pen holder. Warranty period is out too so it will be a paid repair after speaking to Apple who confirmed this is the case.
