Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Take the machine to an Apple Store and mention this thread and ask them to look at it. Then ask that the repair be completed at Apple's expense, be pleasant and persistent and you may get your way. BTW, if you did not purchase AppleCare on this machine, on your next one please do!

Thanks for getting back to me!

I just spoke to an authorised apple repair shop and they said the parts are not available to them, and they use the same system that Apple make available to everyone for parts. My Apple care has just run out sadly. Honestly I am not too fussed about having to pay for the repair, just disappointed to have to deal with what seems like a design flaw with such a good machine. I will take you up on your advice, I am pretty sure it is good advice, and keep you posted. I may call Apple back first just to tell them they sent me on a wild goose chase!

    Thanks again.

Ignore the repair shop and take the machine to an Apple Store, not an AASP! Don't call Apple, simply make a genius appointment, request for a complimentary repair and if necessary show them this thread.

Apple care has just run out

Call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-275-2273.  Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations.  Tell them exactly what you stated in your post.  See what they can do for you!

    GOOD LUCK!

Just took mine into the Sydney store, under Australian consumer law this is covered so no charge for out of warranty. Genius experience was good but some how I was made to feel the device failure was my fault and Apple was doing me a favour by fixing their screw up. Did have a look at the Apple watch but in light of this IMac issue I don't feel all that confident.

The Apple Watch doesn't prop your iMac up very well, so good choice.

This just happened to a coworker here. She was working and the iMacs neck gave out. I heard a pop like her iMac screen had blown out, but it was the neck connection with the back of the machine that had given out! What is procedure to have this manufacturing flaw fixed.?????

Much like everyone else. I was sitting at my pc, not even using it (working on the pc next to it) and I heard a LOUD POP and then noticed my monitor was sitting forward.

I had it propped with some bricks but I like the golf ball solution better.

Mine has been out of warranty for awhile, and from what I've read, it looks like you may or may not get it covered if you are out of apple support and take it to an apple store and you are in the USA. Is this correct? Anyone had luck getting it covered in the USA without apple care?

Our Apple Service says that this dilema is Warranty issue, and remember people, if you are living at EU area, all you stuff has Two year EU warranty, this concerns Apple all so here in EU.

I went to Apple Service and they had one month service line , but as I pointed out that I use this for my business, we made deal that they order new replacement spring for my iMac (iMac was with me at the Service), when is my turn at the service line, they call me and I can go there and 24h they fix my iMac stand.

So I'm at one month service line, but I can use my iMac at home when I waiting, this was good service so far

just dropped my iMac to service, and it not cost me anything, this is covered by Apple warranty. (Finland), repair time is 1-3 days.

After two years you can claim a free repair still.

    My story:

    -iMac stand broken.

    -EU warranty 24 months.

-Official Apple service repair line was 1 month long.

-Official Apple service took my problem at the one month service line, and let me keep my iMac home that time, so that my work does not suffer.

-Got message that it was my turn at the line, got my iMac to the service, Official Apple repair fixed my iMac "leg" one working day.

-This cost me nothing and was warranty issue, there was no any questions or arguing that was this issue warranty or not case, everything went smooth and fast and free of charge.

-My iMac 2013 is in working condition at my home now, all good.

(hope that this does not happen again after one year)

    Hi,

Same problem in a late iMac 27 with little more than a year, Im from Spain. Called Apple support and send me to the nearest store, telling me is the first time they hear about this....again.

Arrived to the store, told me that as the imac is a company's computer, it has only 1 year warranty ?¿?¿, and I have to asume little cost. I said that was not happy with this but ok, please tell me how much, ONLY 430 €!!! Is this a little cost for a piece I barely touch?? Cant believed this

If I pay for this, is there any guarantee that this will not happen again in three, six, or ten months? I guess not

So I take my expensive one year old broken imac back home, will NEVER buy an apple product again, very disappoint for this.

No, there is never any guarantee on things like this, as it has only been encountered by a handful of users and the other tens and tens of millions of iMacs out there have never reported the issue. I would think that you would be very unlucky for it to occur a second time.

Same thing happened to me today. I was just watching a movie in my late 2013 27" iMac when a loud pop sounded. I reached to see what the **** was that, and what a surprise when I see the screen of my expensive machine leaning down!

At least I live in Spain and it is still under warranty, as we have 2 years warranty... We'll see what they tell me on Monday when I call apple support, but I find this unacceptable on this expensive machines.

Dec. 2013 27" iMac just went crack.

Will take it in tomorrow and I was quoted a 4-5 day repair.

Glad I found this thread as it certainly seems the fix should be on Apple.

Sorry so many people have had an issue but glad you took the time to post. Saved me a lot of sweat and tears.

Ha yes, I have had the same experience. I heard a loud crack noise last night & couldn't figure out where it came from...until this morning when I turned the computer on. The screen just hangs...sadly looking downward :-/
