Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Thankfully have an Apple store nearby. Repair scheduled without any hassle; seems they see about one a month. Which left me a little surprised that they didn't have a part in stock.

Also after the repair any future breaks will be repaired for nothing even after AppleCare runs out.

I just had this happen, 27" iMac, late 2012 (and out of warranty).  I was just on the phone and heard a loud snap.  This thread was the first thing that came up in a google search on the topic.

If anyone is looking for a quick temporary fix, I found an empty jumbo bottle of ibuprofen, in addition to the obvious function, is the correct diameter for holding the screen up.

It's not a design fault, it's a parts failure, isolated to a few iMacs. There is a thread here somewhere with pics of the small part that fails.

The number of failures reported here is hardly insubstantial.  In my case, I put in on my desk in early 2013 and rarely touch it. The part spontaneously failed under the weight of the screen, despite me not even using the hinge for day-to-day adjustment. Use of a part that can't even tolerate the earth's gravitational field I do think would constitute a design flaw.

Repaired and back at my desk in 48 hours.

Can't really complain. Still, thanks to all who have posted.

Thank you for your patronising response. It is actually very helpful for Apple users to be aware of how big the problem is, therefore it is essential people add weight to an ongoing issue on forums like these, regardless of the action they choose to take. There was an observation, not a complaint.

    Thanks

Half of all of the iMacs I have at home are affected.

    Do you have better information?

We pay a lot of money for an iMac, this is not acceptable, apple should recognize their mistakes.

That is what I was asking the poster whom I replied to. I have over 20 iMacs in the studio and have never experienced this issue with those or the two stock models they have replaced. Therefore I asked how big the problem is. Some figures would help.

    Maybe you have them?

I have no idea how frequently this is happening, but the thread likely represents a lower bound.  Possibly many people, like me, just find a bottle of vitamin I to prop up their monitor and don't bother with it.  What was surprising is that it happened very suddenly and spontaneously.  My laptop has a loose hinge, but I am sure it is my fault, and possibly normal wear and tear. This is different in that there is no real use let alone abuse, and it failed with no warning.  Apparently it is common enough that one poster here has had it happen twice.  There may be bad batches of hinges, too, so it might be harder to get good statistics.  Perhaps some users, like me, angle the screen down slightly to begin with, to avoid screen reflection and glare, and that puts more strain on the hinge.  I have no idea; this is pure speculation.  But I think it is frequent enough to warrant keeping the reporting in the thread.

I'm going to take mine into an apple store and see if they really do repair it for free. Mine is out of warranty. I will get back to this forum as soon as I get more information. It should be a wild ride....
