Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Did you read the post half way down page 30?  It states it is a known problem by Apple and they will fix it free of charge provided your iMac is less than 3 years old, apparently.

This just happened to my work iMac.  Exact same scenario - sitting here working, didn't even touch the machine, and suddenly a snap and my screen lurched forward.  Not sure how IT is going to handle this, as I can't really afford to be down right now, but it's making it very difficult to work as I'm a rather tall guy and the screen is now facing downwards.

Seems possible that this might indeed point to a design flaw and not merely an isolated defect, but then again my observations are purely anecdotal – only Apple has the numbers to know for sure.  Hopefully I can get this fixed quickly without much downtime.

There are a few (in relation to sales numbers) reports of it in this forum, it suggests a part defect rather than a design flaw. Apple will repair it it free of charge but it will need to go to them. Your IT dept may have other resources.

My Late 2013 iMac is suffering too from this malady.   The "crack" sound scared the bejeebers out of me and the face of the iMac is nowtilting down.

I have scheduled a meeting at the Genius Bar in Leawood, KS this coming week to have them look at the problem.  I'm very hopeful that this will be fixed gratis as it is obviously a design/part selection flaw.  Part of designing a product is not just its engineering but providing specifications for and selection of the parts which will be utilized to build the system..so from my point of view, its a design flaw.

Took mine to the Genius bar at Bluewater this morning after having booked it in with Apple Care a week ago.  Apple Care hadn't bothered to tell the staff at the Bluewater store why I was coming in so the part required hadn't been ordered in.  I was sent home again while they order the part in.  Luckily I'm fairly local but even so it's quite an effort to carry this thing more than a few yards.  I have been told that once they have the part they will still need to keep my machine for up to 14 days for the repair!  I told them I need it for my work.  Without it I simply cannot work as I am a photographer.  They said they will try and prioritise it but can't guarantee anything.  Really not impressed at all.  I only changed from a Windows conventional desktop because I thought the iMac would be a more reliable and better built machine.  Hey ho!

I called Apple Support here in Milano and also send them via e-mail this discussion.

They told me that they don't know anything about this damage should be fixed free of charge. If I want I can bring them the iMac in repair–pay the repair–and if the receive an official Apple admission that the damage is a design fault covered by Apple they are going to give me the money back.

    So I won't repair it.

My iMac is 2 years old.

Just happened to mine, exactly as described. I was standing outside my office when I heard a loud cracking sound. Nothing seemed to be amiss. The next day when I turned on my iMac, I noticed that the screen was shoe gazing, and could not be tilted back up. Luckily I bought an extended warranty at the time of purchase, so I can bring it in for repairs at the nearby Apple Store. Expecting repair to take at least a week.

Mine went about 6 months ago. Was still in warranty but they wanted it for around a week and like plenty of others here, self-employed means this is my work machine so can't be without it for a week just for the stand! So also like plenty of others, just found a new use for my bank card reader which site under the apple logo and keeps the screen at a decent height for working.

Not impressed by Apple though, serious money spent and such a poor defect - and common fault too ;-( Merry Xmas ;-)

And, actually, I think I'll just live with the defect. I've wedged a little Bluetooth speaker under the monitor and it holds it at a decent (if not perfect) angle. Seems better to live with it for another year or two than to do without my work computer for a week or longer while Apple fixes the problem.

I took my iMac in on Wednesday and provided the Genius Bar attendee the information provided in this thread that other owners received a free repair as it appeared to be a design/part defect.  I also provided the SKU's for the part and labor that was utilized by others on this thread.  The Apple employee was appreciative for the research brought to him.  I was cheerful but firm that I expected the repair to be completed at no charge.  The Apple employee agreed.  I got a call late on Friday afternoon letting me know that my Mac was ready to pick up.   Good as new.  No Charge for the repair even though my Mac was purchased back in February of 2014 and I never bought an AppleCare contract for this computer.

Thanks to the community for keeping this thread alive and providing the 'secret sauce' to getting this obvious design flaw fixed.  Thanks to Apple Computer for making an insanely great computer and for great customer service!
