Q: Using Airport Extreme to stream HD video on my Ipad

Hello,

I plan on buying an airport extreme to stream HD videos on my ipad. Does it need to be connected to any internet connection to work ?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2 GHz), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

If the HD videos are resident on your iPad, your iPad will not require an Internet connection to stream. It will require a Wi-Fi network to stream over using AirPlay. This Wi-Fi network, of course, can be provided by the AirPort Extreme or any other wireless router/wireless access point.

I haven't been specific enough, let's say I have no internet connection, a hard drive with HD videos , an iPad , and an AirPort Extreme.

Is it possible to plug the HD to the airport and stream those videos from my iPad?

    Thank you.

Streaming video entails using AirPlay. The minimum requirements for AirPlay are: 1) iTunes "server," 2) AirPlay "speaker," and 3) Wired or wireless network.

Sorry, but I'm still not 100% sure what you are trying to do. Is your goal to stream HD video files, located on an AirPort Disk (HDD attached to an AirPort Extreme), to the iPad? ... or from the iPad to some other device, like an HDTV?

If it's the former, I am aware of at least three different iOS apps for this: 1) Air Playit, 2) Air Video, & 3) StreamToMe.

    Another option is: VLC Streamer

Finally, you may find the following Wired article, about using the FileBrowser app, useful as well.

I'm trying to stream HD video files, located on an AirPort Disk (HDD attached to an AirPort Extreme), to the iPad.

I'm gonna be in a submarine, so absolutely no internet connection available.

Can the set up work ?

    Thanks

Since I won't have a submarine handy to verify, I would suggest that you give it a try using one of the free apps that I mentioned earlier. If you can get it to work, it should in the submarine as well.

Buddy, I have an AirPort Extreme (router + time machine). I use this to save my MacBook backup and I have my personal folders created here. I stream videos to my MacBook on the AirPort Extreme via wifi. Without incurring any internet cost, is it possible to stream those videos directly from the AirPort Extreme to iPad?

Yes, using one of the Apps that Tesserax has listed.

Just to be clear you are not streaming as long as you are opening a file (stored on the hard disk) in some video format that the player can read. The player is on your Macbook or ipad. If you then want to watch it on the TV .. that is where you are streaming.. and that becomes a problem if both directions are handled by wireless.
