connecting ipod to home stereo

what is a self powered device? how do I know if my reciever is compatible with ipod? I have a 3.5mm adapter when I connect to stereo hesd phone jack I get nothing? what am I doing wrong?

Virtually any stereo receiver with an AUX input will work the iPod. For best quality, get an iPod dock because it has line level inputs needed for the receiver. You can still use the headphone jack. In your case, check the volume control and turn it up to 60% full volume. Do not use the phono input.

I have an older (10 years) high end Sony receiver. I want to connect my new iPod 30G Video to this stereo with a Y adapter cable 3.5mm plug to iPod and two RCA plugs to my stereo. My stereo has a Phono input and a AUX input. Which input is better to connect to and why? Thanks for any info that you can supply.
