I was looking at activity monitor to see how things were running and I noticed on %CPU I was between 125%-175%. Can it do this because it is a dual-core processor? And is this bad/a lot if that is the only program running?

Yes. It's relative to one core.

There is never only one program running. If Activity Monitor was the one hogging the CPU, you can remedy that just by quitting it.
I mean if it is the only main app that I am using and it is using majority of both cores? Activity monitor was not what I was inquiring about

I was wondering why under CPU % it was reading over 100% which you said was due to multiple cores.
Post an image of your Activity Monitor. This is mine:
Make certain that you set it to show ALL PROCESSES and % CPU is set to display values from high to low.

"100%" means "all of one core." You have more than one core. "200%" would mean "all of two cores."
Ok thank you, I would post a picture but it was just of a game using about 150% CPU
