Is there a way I can monitor / check what apps and program use data? Either background on my iPhone or when my MacBook is using my iphone as a hotspot.

I use my iPhone as the hotspot for my macbook. The MacBook seems to chew a lot more data even though I'll doing the same things, ie surfing the net, emailing. Why would this be? Is there a way I can monitor / check what apps and program use data? Either in the background on my iPhone or when my MacBook is using my iphone as a hotspot? Thanks
