Q: How do migrate from OSX 10.5.8 to OSX Mavericks?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro. How do I migrate my data and programs to the new computer?

Migration Assistant on the old computer asks for the "passcode for the new computer. where do I find that?

Migration Assistant on the new computer says that the operating systems are different and asks for the old computer to be upgraded. Is thi possible with out making my applications stop working?

Thanks in dvance for any guidance.

Thanks Lanny, but I read the document you suggested and attempted to follow its instructions before posting my question. It did not work. The results I get are as noted:
1. I get asked for a passcode that I do not know where to locate. OR
2. I get a notice that the migration cannot occur because the operating systems are not the same.

I am looking for advice on how to proceed.
