new airport extreme fan always on

My new Airport Extreme (bought yesterday, December 28) turns on it's cooling fan as soon as it powers up. Also the Airport configuration tool shows the message that the device might get too hot but it stays cool to the touch ?

The router is installed in a free place, and I have even lifted the base from the surface by placing it on a small cilinder to allow the air to flow free around the base.

The noise of the fan is at a constant level of > 50db (as if my vacuum cleaner is inside the Airport Extreme).

Apple devices that we have stay connected (MacBook Pro and IPad2), but all other devices (Android smartphones from Samsung and HTC and Windows laptops) lose their connection very frequently (authentication problem) which is very annoying too. Therefore I am starting to think that there is a hardware failure in the Airport Extreme

I went through the installation several times, but I did not see where I could have gone wrong.

The fan is always on in the new AirPort Extreme, but you should not be able to hear it unless you literally place your ear on the AirPort Extreme. Even then, the noise is barely detectable.

You should not get a message that the device is overheating if it has good ventilation.

Based on the information in your post, it does sound like you have a defective AirPort Extreme that should be exchanged.
