Q: iCloud storage problem

I'm getting messages saying my iCloud storage is almost full.

So I went System Prefs > iCloud  and it says I have 208.8 MB of 5 GB available.

But over 2 Gb of what I've used is Mail.

So I opened Mail on my Mac, selected a load of old email messages, (many with big attachments), and moved them to the trash. I then opened trash selected them again and hit the delete key, then I went Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items > In all accounts.

So they should be pretty well deleted!

I then went System Prefs > iCloud, and nothing has changed; I still have 208.8 MB available.

I went back into Mail, deleted a load of Sent messages (many with big attachments) and did the same.

Then I deleted some Junk mail (there wasn't much).

Then I opened Safari, went to www.iCloud.com - opened my Mail account and did the same again.

SO after all this I still have 208.8MB of storage available.

Can someone explain how I free up some space by reducing Mail stoirage please?

Thanks,

Paul

Did you ever find a resolution to this issue?

I'm afraid to say my problem is gone, but not solved.

Apple help had no idea. Genius bar had no idea.

You can see from the thread that lots of people guess but no-one really knew.

I did what I said, and now i don't have the problem any more. My guess is that (as someone here said) there is some kind of buffering issue on the Apple servers, so..

    - you backup all your mails.

    - then you delete all your mails.

    - then you wait, and eventually the problem goes away.

I didn't really notice how long it took for me but it was certainly a matter of weeks.

i still haven't brought all those old emails out of the backup. They seemed important at the time, but hey, life goes on.

Sorry I don't have a definite answer, and its certainly not a quick answer.

    but Good luck anyway.

    Thanks for the response.

I've tried a number of suggestions, none of which have worked. Like in your case, Apple support doesn't have an answer either.

Not the end of the world mind you, as I don't use my icloud.com email address at all (which makes the 1.9gb mail backup file all the more confounding) so I will simply create a new Apple ID to acquire a full 5gb of storage, SHOULD I require it.
