AirPlay Mirroring allows you to mirror your Mac display onto the Apple TV > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
As you can see, it requires OS X Mountain Lion or newer and specific Mac models. If your Mac is not supported, you can use an app like AirParrot to do it
