iphone won't sync with itunes

I recently purchased a new laptop. I downloaded itunes but part way through a pop up said that it couldn't download for mobile devices. When I try to plug in my iphone it says I have to uninstall and reinstall itunes. I tried this twice, but the pop up still comes up and I can't get it to recognise my phone. Any advice please? Thanks!
