Your Internet connection connects to the Ethernet WAN Port on the AirPort Extreme.

I am suggesting that you change the Ethernet negotiation method from Automatic to 100 Mbps Full Duplex because you may be losing connection speed with the Automatic setting.

If the WAN port is reducing your connection speed from 100 Mbps to 30 Mpbs, then that is what the speed of the wireless connection that the AirPort Extreme is broadcasting will be.

You indicated that your Mac was using OS X (10.5.8), which means that you are using AirPort Utility 5.x.

Please open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility

Click on the Airport Extreme

Click Manual Setup

Now, please click the Internet icon at the top of the next window, then click the Internet Connection tab that is located below the Internet icon.

The settings for Ethernet WAN port will appear.

Please click on the settings box to display the different options. Select the 100 Mbps Full Duplex setting, then click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new settings. Allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart.

You can install v5 utility in Lion..

How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML

1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg

2. Download and install unpkg.

http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.

Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

But your AE must be v5 or earlier for this to work.

Exactly what Airport do you own??

And I am not sure it will fix the issue.

What model extreme.. there are 5 models that take 7.6.4 firmware.

The oldest ones will be getting very slow now.

And although again I doubt it will fix the issue.. 7.6.4 is the worst firmware.

Go back to 7.6.1 or if your AE is Gen4 or older go back to 7.5.2 which is better again.

You downgrade by simply holding the option key when you select version in the airport utility summary page.
