Their level of OS is critical to finding if they can have iMessages. It requires OS 10.8 as I recall. Facetime did not ship with older Macs and has to be bought from the App Store for a token charge of about US$0.99

With Facetime it tells me to check my network connection, but my network connection is fine. The fact I am sending this message to the forum is proff of the network connection.
