Q: Older Mac, 2008, but no iMessage or FaceTime.

Recently my parents bought an older mac; a 2008. Everything else works fine except they cannot log into iMessage or FaceTime. They both have apple I.D's but it just won't log in. I know that the problem isn't their I.D's because I tried using it on an iPad and I was able to log in and message succesfully. Essentially what happens is that I try to log in, and it just stays at the log in screen with the loading wheel spinning. No error message comes up to tell me if there is an error, it just won't log in. I even tried logging in with a different password in case that was the problem, but it recognized when the password was wrong. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

iMac, iOS 7.0.4, 2008 model.
