Can't access iCloud from within System Preferences after Mavericks upgrade

I can't access iCloud from within System Preferences after the Mavericks upgrade. It hangs when I type my password and says "A keychain cannot be found to store '1938701351'." I never set up a keychain and have never used keychains before. I just want to be able to back up my calendar because apparently I can no longer locally sync it with my iPod 5. Suggestions?
