How do I reformat an external hardrive (Iomega ScreenPlay HD) so it is compatible with my Macbook Pro?

Hi!

My old external hard drive has given up on me. I haven't been able to back-up my Macbook Pro for about three months. My sister has given me her external hard drive - an Iomega ScreenPlay HD. She has got a Sony laptop.

I am pretty clueless when it comes to things like this. I have a horrible feeling though that if I plug in this external hard drive it will scramble it because it is not compatible with a Mac.

Please could someone advise me here? Am I able to reformat it myself? I have been on to other forums but I can't seem to follow what people are instructing or suggesting. I get as far as Disk Utility and then stop. I don't want to change a setting that may cause the whole thing to crash. The external hard drive is completely empty.

I'm not sure whether this is of any use but here are the details that come up for the new external hard drive:

Partition Map Scheme : Master Boot Record
Disk Identifier : disk1
Media Name : ST350082 0AS Media
Media Type : Generic
Connection Bus : USB
USB Serial Number : 037B56000001147D
Device Tree : IODeviceTree:/PCI0@0/EHC2@1A,7
Writable : Yes
Ejectable : Yes
Location : External
Total Capacity : 500.11 GB (500,107,862,016 Bytes)
Disk Number : 1
Partition Number : 0
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported

I have got another external hard-drive here other than the ScreenPlay HD one. I just thought I'd try this one first.

If someone could help I'd be so grateful.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
