My fiancé and i were able to use airdrop once and now

I tried resetting both phones and still can get it to work.
We have the 5 and 5s with the latest os.

I was having a similar issue. I had Bluetooth and wifi enabled yet airdrop would not work between my iPhone 5s and my ipad. I turned both devices off, then turned them back on, and voila, airdrop now was functional. Give it a try.
Yes, this worked, But why? AirDrop, wifi and Bluetooth have been turned on in both devices since purchase. Will this forgetfulness occur often?
OH, and it only works if the other party is actually using the device at the time - not like a text or an email.
And why is WiFi involved? Bluetooth is perfectly capable of handling files, something I used to do between my 2007 iMac and my old Ericsson W300i (or between 7 PCs running Windows 2000 come to that!)
